NBA to host some of the top U17 athletes in Toronto

(TORONTO, Ont. August 13, 2014) – Canada Basketball is pleased to participate in the 2014 Americas Team Camp presented by NIKE in Toronto, from August 17 to 20.

“We’re excited to have the Americas Team Camp presented by NIKE here this summer,” said Michele O’Keefe, Executive Director, Canada Basketball. “This is a great opportunity to show our friends from our fellow FIBA Americas countries what Canada is like, while showcasing some of our top young athletes, coaches and NBA talent.”

A total of 60 athletes from six countries (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico) will participate in intensive basketball drills and competition, directed by NBA athletes and coaches.

The camp will include appearances by Canadian NBA players, and Jay Triano, head coach of the Canadian Men’s National Team and an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Roy Rana, head coach of the Canada Basketball’s Junior Men’s National Team and Ryerson University Rams (CIS) will lead the Canadians in the four-day event at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. A full list of Canadian athletes can be found below.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our young athletes to learn valuable skills from some of the world’s top coaches and players,” said Rana. “It also provides them the unique experience to play and learn alongside their international competitors while on home soil.”

Also participating in the camp are NBA assistant coaches Kenny Atkinson of the Atlanta Hawks, Chris Finch of the Houston Rockets, Brett Gunning of the Orlando Magic, Eric Hughes of the Milwaukee Bucks, as well as Canadian citizen and Swaziland native Jama Mahlalela of the Toronto Raptors. Gersson Rosas of the Houston Rockets will act as Camp Director. Coaches from each country will also attend the camp and learn alongside NBA coaches.

Canada Basketball will also use the weekend to host a coach school and clinic in partnership with the NBA.

“Coaching education continues to be a key focus for Canada Basketball,” added O’Keefe. “This event is the perfect opportunity to invite Canadian coaches to see what international basketball looks like at this age, while learning from NBA coaches.”
